City of Prattville Celebrates Mardi Gras

Mobile may be the originator of Mardi Gras, but the celebration is a big deal throughout the south.

“I think it just started reaching out to northern Alabama or up through Alabama from the coast. I know that they have them in Decatur and other places as well so I think it’s justĀ  beginning to filter on through the state,” says Barbara Simpson.

For Prattville, celebrating Mardi Gras not only brings the community together but also shows visitors what their town has to offer.

“Prattville is a wonderful and fun place to be and we love to celebrate fun, family activities and also show off our downtown,” says Louise Jennings.

Grand Marshall Louise Jennings says the parade gives everyone involved a chance to be creative, which is why she put a twist on her float this year.

“We did the thelma and Louise routine because thought it would be fun and celebrate free spirit and this is the star of the parade – the 1966 Ford thunderbird that was driven in the movie and I think it’s famous all by itself,” says Jennings.

Each year floats are judged on their creative efforts. But it’s more than just the friendly competition that keeps people coming back to show off their floats.

“They just love us, they love us. When they get in that line and we go down there and we’re throwing moon pies and throwing out the beads, they just love it,” says participant Dean Basket.

It’s something they believe everyone can enjoy.
