iHeart Prom Dress Giveaway Draws a Big Crowd

Excitement builds as high school girls from across the River Region stand in a line that stretches around the building.
The time is finally here to find their very own prom dress.

Euliah Reaves is one of those girls.

“It’s exciting because I was one of the first ones to come in,” said Reaves,
“I’m really happy because prom dresses are expensive.”

All the dresses were donated.

“We had a lot of good people that dropped off some really nice dresses. Then we get them, clean them, press them, spot them, go through them. Some of them, that aren’t up quite to snuff, we don’t even put out. This year we had over 2200 that met the criteria, so we were excited,” said Jim Massey of Jim Massey’s Cleaners.

Twenty-two hundred dresses all free for families that may not be able to afford one otherwise.

“Times are hard. Every girl wants to go the prom, and I’m telling you, after paying 11 and 12 hundred dollars for prom dresses, I’ve done it. Everybody don’t have that. And to come in here and get a free dress and all you have to do is get your shoes now? pshh, perfect. Yeah, I’m pretty excited,” said Chris Coleman, Operations Manager of iHeart Media.

With the help of sponsors and volunteers, it’s all about allowing girls a special night in their very own dress.

“Just gives the opportunity that makes sure they can go to prom and have a wonderful experience. Come in, shop for the dresses themselves,” said Machea Jones with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

And after trying them on, Reaves thinks she has found the one.

“Yes, it’s the perfect fit,” said Reaves.

And not only that, her twin sister found one, too.

The prom dress giveaway will go on Saturday, Feb. 25th from 8am to noon at the old Goody’s building in the Promenade Shopping Center on Eastern Boulevard.
