Carver High School Honors 2020 Graduates
Carver High School (Montgomery) is among the first few MPS schools to have graduation…social distancing style.
More than 200 graduates accepted their diplomas in waves. Groups of 15 students at a time entered the building to receive their diplomas.
The family groups were required to stay together and at least 6 feet apart from another family group.
“We wanted to do something to let them know that just because there’s a setback you can still endure and make the best out of any situation,” says Carver Principal Gary Hall.
Students were allowed to have three family members at the ceremony.
Graduating Sr. Leila Jackson says this year taught her an important lesson about perseverance.
“The fact that we had all this going on, and you still had to stay focused, you still had to have the mindset to do what you need to do and stay focused on what you want to be in life,” said Jackson.
For parents, it was equally important to see their children celebrated for their accomplishments.
Leila’s mother, Theresa Chattman says parents are very proud of students for finishing the task at had despite all the major changes.
“They had so much taken from them,” says Chattman. ” Prom, sports, all of that, and we are happy the school tried to at least give them something as a way of saying we’re proud of you for all your hard work.”
Principal Hall says this years Valedictorian and Salutatorian are a combination he’s never seen before. “Two males. Both play sports, both play football and both have scholarships. That’s a tremendous accomplishment for those young men.
Kole Williams is Carver High Schools 2020 Valedictorian, and Andre Howell is Salutatorian.
Cars lined up outside the school for staging before entering the building.
