Sen. Katie Britt speaks about Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s hold on military confirmations over Pentagon abortion policy

U.S. Senator Katie Britt spoke at the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce’s Washington Brief breakfast this morning. Senator Britt was asked about the fact that some Republicans are now speaking out in frustration against Senator Tommy Tuberville’s hold on military confirmations. Britt spoke to a packed crowd at the RSA Activity Center about her support for Israel’s war against Hamas and the war in Ukraine. She also told reporters that she does not support the Biden administration’s new policy of paying for travel when servicemembers have to go out of state to get an abortion. Senator Tuberville has said he will continue to hold the military nominations up unless the Pentagon ends – or puts to a vote in Congress – this new policy.

President Biden’s administration instituted the policy after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Britt says she grew up in Enterprise which has a strong military community, and she knows how important servicemen and women are in keeping our country safe. Britt says, ” We have always said taxpayer dollars will not going to go towards funding abortion, so finding a pathway forward that continues to protect life and at the same time allows us to to move these nominees forward is the priority of the conference right now. So we’re having those conversations with Senator Tuberville at the lead and we look forward to finding a resolution.”

The Senate was able to confirm three top military officers on Thursday — including the first female member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — but around 370 nominees are still blocked. The Senate has traditionally approved large groups of military nominations by a voice vote, but just one senator’s objection can upset that process.
