CAMPAIGN 2024: U.S. House District 2 Democratic, Republican primaries heading to runoffs
CAMPAIGN 2024: Both the Democratic and Republican primaries in the newly-redrawn U.S. House District 2 are heading to runoffs.
The district was redrawn last year to give Black Alabama voters a greater chance at representation. It now extends from the Georgia to the Mississippi state line and includes all of Montgomery County and part of Mobile County as well as areas in between.
In the Democratic Primary, Shomari Figures and Anthony Daniels are advancing to a runoff. They were the top two finishers in the race that had 11 candidates on the ballot.
In the Republican Primary, Dick Brewbaker and Caroleene Dobson led a field of eight candidates and will face each other in a runoff.
A runoff is required when no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote. The runoff will be held April 16.
This is an open seat because the current District 2 U.S. Representative Barry Moore got drawn out of the district when the lines were changed. He is from Enterprise, which is now in District 1. Moore chose to run against fellow Republican Congressman Jerry Carl for that seat.
