During 44 seasons with the Wildcats, Trinity Head Baseball Coach Ken Whittle captured his 800th career win. The big win for Whittle came on Friday when the Wildcats took down Montgomery Catholic 10-0.
“It’s really neat to maybe reach a milestone that you never considered you would get that close to and so after reflecting on it a little bit I was pretty excited afterwards, but you focus on the game more than you
focus on the number and so afterwards I got the chance to celebrate with my wife and my girls so it was a lot of fun.” says Whittle.
Two years ago after his 43rd season coaching the Wildcats, Whittle decided to retire. However this year, Whittle decided to come out of retirement to help the program while they search for their next head coach. Another thing that helped influence Whittle to return to the diamond were the seniors on this year’s team.
“These guys were 9th graders when I retired. This is the last class I kind of picked or you know had together. So, I felt not obligated but I felt that I would like to help these guys go out with somebody they knew and were a little bit familiar,” says Whittle.
Whittle’s coaching career has become full circle as some of his former players now serve on his staff, and one of those former players turned assistant coaches is Carter Clark.
“I think it’s a legacy he has truly left behind something nobody else will be able to replace. He built it from the ground up he’s probably going to be the best coach that Trinity ever has,” says Clark.
Trinity Senior and second baseman Wilson Albrecht, expresses that he was surprised when it was announced that Whittle would take over the head coaching role this season. However, while Albrecht was shocked, he was equally as excited for the opportunity to play for Whittle another season and to try and get him a seventh state championship.
“We didn’t think we were going to get Coach Whittle this year so it’s just awesome being able to you know get him to 800 wins, and we’re just trying to get him another state championship here it’s just amazing,” says Albrecht.
