2024 Joe Sewell Award Finalists announced
The Board of Directors of the Joe Sewell Memorial Award and John Sewell Memorial Scholarship have released the names of its 2024 Senior Finalists. This is the 20th anniversary of the award that is given out each year to senior athletes in Elmore County that exemplify Christian leadership qualities. At this year’s banquet there will be a total of $19,000 in scholarships that will be given out with one male and one female being awarded the top honor, the Joe Sewell Memorial Award, and the $3500 John Sewell Scholarship. There are other awards given out during the banquet for categories including academics, athletics, leadership, and church, community, and character, one male and one female will be selected for each category and given a $1500 scholarship.
This award honors the legacy of Joe Sewell who is a native of the Titus community and went on to play major league baseball from 1920-1933 and was later inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977. Joe’s cousin, John Sewell, which the top scholarship is named after, spent much of his time coaching young people. Both Joe and John left a lasting legacy in Elmore County.
The keynote speaker at this year’s event is Charlie Goodyear. Goodyear is the Assistant Athletic director for Athletic Performance at Huntingdon College.
