A man has been sentenced for beating his grandmother to death in Montgomery in 2019.

Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey says that John Michael Perryman has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Last month, Perryman was convicted of capital murder in the death of 79-year-old Evelyn Perryman.

The sentence was imposed by Circuit Judge James Anderson, who presided over the trial.

As Action 8 News has reported, Montgomery police arrested John Perryman in June of 2019. Bailey said evidence showed Perryman broke into his grandmother’s house on Gateway Court and bludgeoned her to death with a large metal object. He then took money from her wallet and drove away in her car.

Evelyn Perryman was found dead the next day when her daughter went to her house to check on her. The victim’s car was located later that day in an apartment complex near Walmart on Eastern Boulevard. John Perryman was taken into custody at the store and denied any involvement in his grandmother’s murder, Bailey said.

Rosalind McCain, the eldest daughter of Evelyn Perryman, told Action 8 News at the trial, “Of all the grandchildren, he was the one that it seemed she did the most for, if that makes sense. She took him in when his mom put him out. She provided him with a place to live. She fed him, she clothed him. Even after she had to put him out, she would still allow him to come by, and (was) doing things for him. But, that was the hard part, knowing that a family member would do something like that.”

“Let this sentence serve as yet another warning to the violent criminals in this community that your actions will not be tolerated. Law enforcement, my office, and our judges take violent crime very seriously and we will continue to work together to remove you from our streets for the rest of your life,” Bailey said.
