Dozen inmates graduate from Troy-Tutwiler Garden Program
Some inmates at the Julia Tutwiler Prison in Wetumpka now have a new skillset.
The Alabama Department of Corrections and Troy University held a graduation ceremony Wednesday for the next class of the Troy-Tutwiler Garden Program.
Developed by Troy University, the program was created to teach female inmates about horticulture and nutrition through a 15-week Fundamentals of Gardening Course.
ADOC says the inmates have access to healthy food and obtain skills that can help them secure employment upon release.
At graduation, participants earn a Certificate of Completion. There is also an advanced class for those participants that have graduated from the fundamentals course.
There are 24 inmates currently enrolled in the program. 12 of those graduated Wednesday.
In addition, there is extensive involvement from Troy University Students in data collection, curriculum development, teaching garden and nutrition classes, gardening with the inmates, and program marketing.
Approximately 60 inmates have participated in this program since its inception in 2019.
