Fort Moore renamed back to Fort Benning

The Secretary of Defense has renamed Fort Moore in Georgia back to Fort Benning.

For nearly a century, the U.S. Army installation was named for Confederate officer Henry L. Benning, a Columbus native.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum Monday renaming the Army base after Cpl. Fred G. Benning.

Cpl. Fred G. Benning was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism in action during World War I with the U.S. Army in France in 1918.

Secretary Hegseth says the change underscores the installation’s storied history of service to the United States of America, honors the warfighter ethos, and recognizes the heroes who have trained at the installation for decades and will continue to train on its storied ranges.

Fort Benning was one of nine military installations ordered to be renamed three years ago.
