Opelika student in custody after bringing gun to school

An Opelika High School student is now in custody after bringing a gun to campus Friday.

Officials with the Opelika Police Department say around 3:00 p.m., a 16-year-old student was found in possession of the firearm.

The student was taken into custody by Opelika Police School Resource Officers and was immediately escorted from the campus.

To ensure the safety of the students and staff, additional police officers were present during dismissal.

Opelika PD says no injuries were reported and there is no danger to other students at this time.

The incident remains under investigation.
