Selma AmeriCorps builds its members and the community

AmeriCorps — it’s members — and the work they do — are being highlighted all over the country — as part of National AmeriCorps Week.

The federal program provides communities with manpower and resources needed to address specific challenges within a community.

“We’ve built porches, we’ve put in floors. We’ve helped put siding around houses, replaced windows, etcetera,” said Field Coordinator Kenny Allen.

AmeriCorps members gain real-world experience through their efforts — while making a direct impact on their community.

“A lot of people were caught without insurance. So, Selma AmeriCorps program was established to go out and help these people get their houses back up to living standard,” Allen said.

“It builds people and it builds community,” said Selma Planning and Development Director Danielle Wooten.

“Gives us boots on the ground to actually go out and get this work done.”
