Selma Winn-Dixie to be converted into an Aldi
The Winn-Dixie store on Dallas Avenue in Selma has closed so that it can be converted into an Aldi.
Remodeling has already started and will take several months to complete.
Aldi bought the Winn-Dixie chain in 2023, with plans to convert some stores into its own brand. Stores in Auburn and Northport, which is near Tuscaloosa, are undergoing conversions.
Earlier this year, Aldi decided to sell around 170 stores back to a group that includes Winn-Dixie’s CEO and President Anthony Hucker and the company’s supply chain partner C&S Wholesale Grocers. It’s not known which stores Aldi is keeping and which ones it is selling back.
“When they bought Winn-Dixie, some of the Winn-Dixies were close to Aldi. So they said, ‘Hey, this is too close.’ So, they sold some of them back. You know, we’ll keep the ones that we want to renovate, if it’s not close enough to an Aldi we’ve already built. And so, they hired general contractors like Witherington to come in and tear down,” Ellis Hope of Witherington Construction Company told Action 8 News.
The new Aldi in Selma is expected to open in August.
Both Winn-Dixie and Aldi have several stores in our area.
