Quilters Gather in Montgomery for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Awareness Forum

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Dozens of quilters gathered in downtown Montgomery on Saturday for the Block-A-Month Quilting Club’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Awareness Forum. The event featured a quilt show where members displayed themed quilts and highlighted the importance of supporting individuals affected by dementia.

The forum was dedicated to Lois Brown, a longtime member of the Archibald Quilters, who has prioritized sewing fidget quilts—quilts designed to provide sensory stimulation and engagement for people with dementia.

Sandra Ledyard, a quilter, shared how dementia has personally affected her family.

“My mother was diagnosed with dementia over two years ago, and she had a lot of health issues in my family,” Ledyard said. “It kind of just took us by storm. We didn’t have resources, we didn’t know much about the illness, and her condition progressively worsened. We just really didn’t know where to turn. Because of that experience, I became very passionate about learning as much as I could about it and sharing what I learned.”

The event was held at the Juliette Hampton Morgan Memorial Library in downtown Montgomery.
