18-year-old arrested in Tuskegee following police chase on Interstate 85

An 18-year-old has been arrested in Tuskegee following a police chase that started in Opelika and went down Interstate 85.

Opelika police say around midnight, they were called to investigate a report of a stolen vehicle in the 200 block of North 23rd Street, which is just off Pepperell Parkway.

At about 5:15AM, officers patrolling around Cherry Avenue reported seeing the stolen vehicle and tried to stop the driver. They say the driver fled and led them on a chase that went down Interstate 85, with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office becoming involved.

Opelika police say the driver crashed in the area of Howard Road and Heritage Hill Road in Macon County at around 5:37AM, then ran away.

The suspect was later found at a home in the 4000 block of Sumbry Street in Tuskegee, according to police.

He has been identified as Nehemiah Coles, and is charged with theft and felony attempting to elude law enforcement. He is being held in the Lee County Justice Center.
