People gather to commemorate Juneeteenth in Elmore County
The Juneteenth celebrations continued this weekend in Wetumpka.
The Elmore County Civic Improvement League held a gathering Saturday at Gold Star Park to commemorate the official end of slavery in the United States in 1865.
People from all over came together to enjoy live music from worship teams, enjoy delicious food, activities for the kids and see the arts and crafts.
“We need to come together and be as one and regardless of what’s going on in the world today that you still have good people in the world that want to celebrate each other and  Want to come together in unity,” said Myeisha Johnson with ECCIL.
Juneteenth was made a federal holiday in 2021 and was just recognized as a state holiday in Alabama this year.
