Montgomery Students Receive Free School Supplies at Several Saturday Events

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) — With the start of the school year almost a week away, organizations across Montgomery are helping students gear up for class.

Montgomery Public Schools resume on Aug. 5, and community groups are working to ensure students are prepared. On Saturday, dozens of cars lined up outside 2nd Chance Auto Sales for a drive-through giveaway. Volunteers handed out more than 500 backpacks filled with notebooks, folders, pencils and other school supplies.

In addition to the supplies, the company offered refreshments to help families beat the heat and gave away uniform shirts to students. Organizers said the goal was to make sure every child starts the school year ready to learn.

Across town, the City of Montgomery’s Parks and Recreation Department hosted its annual Back to School Bash at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex. Hundreds of families attended the event, which featured free school supplies, raffled bikes, free haircuts and information booths for parents.

Students also enjoyed games, inflatables and other activities. More than 1,000 backpacks were distributed during the event, which was made possible through partnerships with several local businesses.
