Montgomery mayor, police chief speak about recent violence in the city

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed and Police Chief James Graboys have held a news conference regarding the deadly violence that has hit the Capital City in recent days.

The first incident happened Friday, September 19. At 1:30AM, police were called to the 1700 block of West Haven Lane. They found 30-year-old Fedel Saunders, who died of a gunshot wound.

At 4AM Saturday, September 20, police went to the 3100 block of Virginia Loop Road to a reported fire. They found 50-year-old Timeko Coleman, who died at the scene of blunt force trauma.

At 7:40PM that night, police were called to the 5100 block of Carmichael Road. They found 37-year-old Anthony Davis and 44-year-old Prentice Parks, who both died of gunshot wounds. Another man had a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital.

On Sunday, September 21, at 2:11AM, police were called to a hospital where two people were being treated for stab wounds. 19-year-old Ahmari Capleton died. The other person’s wounds are said to be non-life threatening. The stabbing happened in the 3200 block of Raintree Drive.

Mayor Reed and Chief Graboys both said these killings were isolated incidents involving poor conflict resolution between people who knew each other.

“These incidents were unique to the people involved with them,” Chief Graboys said. “They highlight the importance of resolving conflicts without resorting to violence. I’m about to take this moment because I want to call on the community: get involved with the people in your life. Be the voice of reason.”

“We have to think about the humanity,” Mayor Reed said. “We have to think about the impact that words and actions may have. And, we have to learn how to walk away. We have to learn how to turn the other cheek and learn how to just move on because too many of these situations are escalating into deadly activities and deadly outcomes.”
