Only on 8: Political Analyst Steve Flowers discusses races for Lt. Governor, Attorney General and Secretary of State

ONLY ON 8: Our political analyst Steve Flowers is sharing his insight into what he believes will be some of the most competitive races in Campaign 2026.

In the race for lieutenant governor, there are currently six Republicans running. They are Wes Allen, Patrick Bishop, George Childress, Dean Odle, Rick Pate and Nicole Wadsworth. Current Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth can’t run again due to term limits. Flowers says two candidates have the edge over the others.

In the attorney general’s race, there are three Republicans running — Pamela Casey, Jay Mitchell and Katherine Robertson. Incumbent Steve Marshall also can’t run again due to term limits and is seeking Alabama’s open U.S. Senate seat instead. Flowers expects this race to head to a runoff.

In the secretary of state’s race, there are two Republicans — Caroleene Dobson and Andrew Sorrell — and one Democrat, Wayne Rogers. Current Secretary of State Wes Allen is running for lieutenant governor. Flowers says he expects a Republican will be the eventual winner.

While the primaries aren’t until May 19, which is about seven months away, he believes the field is pretty much set unless a well-known celebrity decides to run. That’s because influential groups have already made their endorsements of the candidates who have already announced.
