ALEA SBI launches death investigation in Crenshaw County

State Bureau of Investigation agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency have launched a death investigation in Crenshaw County.

ALEA says around 1:44 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, at the request of the sheriff’s office, special agents responded to the scene at the 1000 block of Quail Tower Road in Luverne.

Once they arrived, they found 44-year-old Travis Clayton, of Opp, dead. Authorities have not released how Clayton died.

The suspect was later identified as 39-year-old DeAndre Phiffer, of Rutledge.

Phiffer was taken into custody and officially charged with manslaughter. He is currently in the Crenshaw County Jail.

Investigators say once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Crenshaw County District Attorney’s Office.
