Two charter school teachers from Montgomery are among three in the state who have received the 2025 Nelson-Marshall Award for Teaching Excellence.

The Alabama Public Charter School Commission has announced these award winners:

Elementary Teacher of the Year: Ms. Geumwha Kwon, L.E.A.D. Academy Montgomery
Middle School Teacher of the Year: Mrs. Amber Concannon, Covenant Academy of Mobile
High School Teacher of the Year: Ms. DeShanda Williams, L.E.A.D. Academy Montgomery

The Nelson-Marshall Awards for Teaching Excellence are presented each year by the APCSC to celebrate exceptional educators who make a difference in the lives of Alabama students. Each year, three teachers are selected—one from elementary (K–5), one from middle (6–8) and one from high school (9–12).

“The educators we celebrate through the Nelson-Marshall Teaching Excellence Awards are lighting the path forward for public education in Alabama. They represent the mission of Alabama’s charter schools — to empower every child and elevate every future,” said Logan Searcy, executive director of the Alabama Public Charter School Commission. “Their creativity, compassion, and leadership inspire not only their students, but the entire charter school community across our state.”

The Nelson-Marshall Awards for Teaching Excellence are named in honor of the late Commissioners Patricia Nelson and Chester Marshall, who helped establish and advance the charter school movement in Alabama.
