ACTION 8 NEWS SPECIAL: The Top 8 Stories of 2025

Action 8 News presents the Top 8 Stories of 2025. This is our annual look back at the stories that shaped our local area during the year.

We don’t rank the stories in a particular order, because everyone has their own ideas on which stories are most important.

In 2025, a mass shooting in downtown Montgomery left two people dead and a dozen others injured, some seriously. Jackson Hospital faced bankruptcy, as Winn-Dixie left the state and the historic St. James Hotel in downtown Selma closed yet again.

Several longtime local mayors lost their re-election bids. Auburn University welcomed both a new men’s basketball coach and a new football coach.

The southern half of the state was hit with a snowstorm, and Action 8 News debuted our second Lifesaver Radar to fully close the “radar gap” in West Alabama that had kept thousands of people from getting the same kind of severe weather coverage enjoyed by people in the rest of the state.
