ONLY ON 8: Political Analyst Steve Flowers talks about U.S. Senate race, state Democratic candidates
Action 8 Political Analyst Steve Flowers talks about the U.S. Senate race and how money is already playing a role, even more than two months before voters go to the polls.
The Republican side features candidates Seth Burton, Dale Shelton Deas, Jr., Jared Hudson, Steve Marshall, Barry Moore, Morgan Murphy and Rodney Walker.
Flowers notes that Barry Moore, who’s currently serving as Congressman from Alabama’s 1st District, is already hitting the TV airwaves early and often with campaign ads touting that President Trump has endorsed his candidacy. Flowers says Moore will have far more campaign money than any of the other Republicans in the race and told us where that money is coming from.
Another well-known candidate in that race is Steve Marshall, who is currently serving as Alabama Attorney General. Marshall recently criticized Gov. Kay Ivey for commuting the sentence of death row inmate Charles Burton to life in prison without parole. Flowers says that Marshall has built his reputation as being tough on crime, but in this case, Ivey, who’s tough on crime herself, believed that there were reasons not to have Burton executed by the state for his role in a 1991 murder, because he wasn’t the person who shot the victim.
Flowers also spoke of the field of candidates that the Alabama Democratic Party is running in the state races. Unlike in other recent elections, Flowers says this crop of candidates is strong, with former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones running for governor, State Rep. Phillip Ensler running for lieutenant governor and former Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks running to reclaim his old office after sitting out due to term limits. While Flowers says he doesn’t believe most Democratic candidates will have enough support to win, he does believe that they could cross above the 40% threshold of votes in November, which has been the recent limit of support that Democratic candidates have mustered.
