Woman faces animal cruelty charges in Auburn
AUBURN, Ala. (WAKA) – A woman has been arrested in Auburn on charges of aggravated animal cruelty and public intoxication.
Auburn police say on March 23, they got a report of an injured dog and an intoxicated person at an apartment in the 200 block of West Longleaf Drive. They responded to the scene and say they found the dog and its owner, 22-year-old Karina Lynn Higgins of Auburn.
Police say Higgins was arrested for public intoxication and taken to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika for treatment. The dog was taken to the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine for treatment of its injuries and was later released into the custody of Auburn Animal Control.
After an investigation, police say a warrant for aggravated cruelty to animals was obtained for Higgins. Today, she was arrested and is being held at the Lee County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
