As Gov. Kay Ivey marks nine years in office, a prominent state government building in downtown Montgomery will be named in her honor.

The Attorney General’s Office Building will be renamed the Kay Ivey Office Building. The building is at the corner of Dexter Avenue and South Bainbridge Street, directly across the street from the Alabama Capitol and the Lurleen B. Wallace Office Building.

The Attorney General’s Office Building was constructed in 1937. It was originally the State Highway Building before becoming the Public Safety Building. The five-story building was last renovated in 2007.

Wallace was Alabama’s first female governor, while Ivey is the second.

The Alabama Building Renovation Finance Authority met yesterday and voted on a resolution to rename the building in Ivey’s honor. That followed the Alabama Legislature passing a resolution urging the renaming.

It was April 10, 2017, that Ivey became governor. She has served the longest continuous time as governor in Alabama history.

She was lieutenant governor at the time and rose to the office upon the resignation of then-Gov. Robert Bentley.

On that day, Ivey committed to her fellow Alabamians that the Ivey administration would be “open, honest and transparent.” She has delivered on that promise, tackled the hard issues head on and has made historic progress for our state, the Governor’s Office said.

Ivey’s term will expire in January 2027. At that time, she will have served nearly 10 years.
