ONLY ON 8: Political Analyst Steve Flowers on Tuberville residency challenge, Tuesday runoff turnout
ONLY ON 8 (WAKA) – Action 8 Political Analyst Steve Flowers discusses whether the question over gubernatorial candidate Tommy Tuberville’s residency has finally been put to rest and what turnout may be like in Tuesday’s primaries.
Yesterday, the Alabama Republican Party held a hearing on Tuberville’s residency. State law requires a candidate for governor to live in the state for seven years. Tuberville’s former Republican primary opponent Ken McFeeters has questioned whether Tuberville, who has houses in Auburn and in Florida, meets that requirement. After considering tax forms, voting records and other documents, a party committee decided unanimously that Tuberville meets those requirements and will be the party’s nominee for governor.
In the primary, Tuberville got 85% of the vote to McFeeters 9.5%.
Action 8’s Glenn Halbrooks asked Flowers whether that decision will put this question to bed. Flowers says it does, within the Republican Party, but he still believes that the Alabama Democratic Party will challenge it. Flowers says he would be surprised if a court took action against Tuberville.
As for Tuesday’s runoffs, Flowers expects turnout to be around 11-12%, or about half of what it was in the May 19 primaries. For the candidates, he says the key to winning is to make sure their voters get to the polls. He says with sophisticated polling operations, the campaigns know who their voters are. In addition, big groups like ALFA, Manufacture Alabama and the Alabama Forestry Association will work to make sure the candidates they endorsed get their voters to the polls.
