Montgomery YMCA branch reopens with new improvements, new name
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – A Montgomery YMCA has reopened with new improvements and a new name.
Community leaders unveiled the Dalraida Family YMCA, formerly known as the East Family YMCA.
The reopening follows a $2.5 million transformation after YMCA leadership said it needed a refresh.
The renovation took about a year and-a-half to complete and features an additional 7,000 square feet of wellness space, a new weight room, cardio and group exercise spaces and a “Y-Town” for kids.
“What’s really cool about the “Y-Towns” are that they are direct replicas of businesses in our community. You see a Publix, you see a fire station, you see a sheriff, you see Faulkner University, so many cool spaces in there. The reason being is we want families and kids to be able to connect to the local community. We want them to be able to imagine themselves serving or working in those spaces. It’s a fun way for kids to be able to see themselves as something great,” Montgomery YMCA CEO AJ Hernandez told Action 8 News.
The Dalraida Family YMCA is located on Pelzer Avenue in Montgomery.
