MONGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Alabama State School Supt. Dr. Eric Mackey has approved a Ten Commandments display to be used in the state’s public schools.

The Alabama Legislature approved a requirement to display the Ten Commandments in certain schools beginning January 1, 2027.

In a letter to local school superintendents, Mackey said that subject to the availability of donated funds or displays, the requirement is to display an 11×14 inch poster that includes historical information and has been approved by the state superintendent.

His letter says the poster must be displayed in:

• An entry way or other common area, such as the cafeteria or school library.
• Every school within the jurisdiction of each local board of education, unless that school serves kindergarten through 4th grade exclusively.
• Every 5th through 12th grade classroom where United States history is routinely taught pursuant to the Alabama Course of Study.

Mackey says the image provided is the only one that is approved for display. He says as provided by law, printed copies will be available at no charge for schools.
