Leaders break ground on Columbus Square Phase III apartments

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA Action 8) – Brand new affordable housing apartments are now open in the city of Montgomery.

The Montgomery Housing Authority joined city and county leaders for a ribbon cutting and grand opening at the Columbus Square Phase III apartments Tuesday.

The complex includes around 60 low-income tax credit units and took about 18 months to complete.

Leaders say the city is dealing with a major shortage of affordable housing units. They hope this new development creates a small dent in a huge problem the city is facing.

“That’s what we are trying to do here is transform Montgomery so that people will know that its a good safe place to live, that you’ll be able to have affordable housing, and you’ll be able to go to work,” says John Knight, the Chairman of the Montgomery Housing Board. “You don’t have to drive 50, 100 miles. You can just walk, if you have to.”

“The key to this is is it impacts economic stability for the city and for the county. We can’t attract industry, we can’t attract business. We cant grow our community unless our workforce has suitable housing to live in,” says Monica Whiting, the CEO of the Montgomery Housing Authority.

Housing leaders say they are looking to build more affordable housing on the same lot that Columbus Square were built on, but those talks are still in the early stages.
