WETUMPKA, Ala. (WAKA) – Action 8 News has confirmed that the Republican nominee for Elmore County coroner has dropped out of the race following his arrest.

Court records show Lamar Neighbors was arrested on Thursday, June 25, on a charge of aggravated theft by deception. No other details were made available.

The Alabama Republican Party has told Action 8 News that the Elmore County Republican Party will now form a subcommittee to begin collecting applicants starting next week and interviewing potential candidates. The committee will make a recommendation to the full executive committee to vote on it.

The county party has to decide on a nominee by August 24 to get that person’s name on the November ballot. There will not be a special primary election.

Right now, there is not a Democratic candidate for that office.
