Dallas County voters elect the first black sheriff in the county’s history.

Dewayne Sanders defeated two independent challengers to win the race.

Sanders held a watch party — that turned into a victory party — as the results came in from the polls.

Sanders says as sheriff — he plans to work to improve the relationship between law enforcement and the community.

He says he’s honored by the vote of confidence — from Dallas County voters.

“I want to thank my supporters that voted for me for Dallas Co. Sheriff. I thank them for coming out in May and I thank them for coming out again, I appreciate that,” he said.

“I thank them so much for that. I thank God for allowing them to be in my life and giving me the opportunity to become sheriff.”

Sanders officially takes office in January.
