Protecting your pets on the 4th of July

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – We’re just days away from celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary, but did you know that July 5th is usually one of the busiest days of the year for animal shelters across the country?

The things that we tend to enjoy around the holidays can cause our pets to run away from home. From things like fireworks anxiety, summer heat and much more, there are tips that we can do to help keep our pets calm and safe this holiday weekend.

  • Set up a quiet den with closed curtains, white noise, familiar bedding, and a favorite enrichment toy.
  • Walk your pup early in the day so they’re calm and tired ahead of the evening.
  • Skip backyard parties and late-night walks. An intentionally quiet evening is a gift to your pup.
  • If your pup has shaken, paced, or bolted during past fireworks, call your vet ahead of the weekend.

Action 8’s Estee Morrison sat down with Jeff Gold, owner of the Montgomery Camp Bow Wow location, and a special four-legged friend, Lexie Gray, to learn more about what pets owners can do to help keep man’s best friend safe. You can watch that interview above.
