Gov. Kay Ivey declares September 4 as “College Colors Day” in Alabama
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Gov. Kay Ivey has welcomed college mascots from across the state to the Alabama Capitol as she proclaimed College Colors Day for Friday, September 4.
The announcement event is an annual tradition in Alabama. This year, Friday, September 4, will be the day that Gov. Ivey encourages everyone to wear their favorite team’s colors to work, school or just out in public.
The tradition is more than just getting fans fired up to support their team. It’s also a reminder of the impact Alabama’s 14 public universities have, with more than 180,000 students faculty and staff spread out on campuses statewide.
“When it comes to supporting Alabama’s colleges and universities, we’re all on the same team and we’re playing to win,” Gov. Kay Ivey told the crowd. “Alabama’s public colleges and universities are vast economic engines. They educate our future workforce while pioneering research to give our Alabamians a better quality of life, and they contribute over $27 billion, with a B, dollars in economic impact.”
Today’s announcement was also attended by SGA leaders and hosted by the Higher Education Partnership.
“We celebrate universities because of the difference they make for every Alabamian,” Higher Education Partnership Executive Director Gordon Stone said. “The state’s 14 public universities
provide excellent educational pathways for every student to achieve their career dreams.”
The Higher Education Partnership not only encourages every Alabamian to show their university spirit by wearing their school’s colors, but also to share photos on social media using the hashtag #CollegeColorsDay.
