Heart of Alabama Food Bank gets helping hand from Publix volunteers
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Dozens of Publix workers have traded their grocery store for the Heart of Alabama Food Bank as they help hungry people in our area.
Volunteers from stores in Montgomery, Pike Road, Wetumpka, Alexander City and Troy helped pack and prepare food boxes for local families in need. They also helped put together senior supplement packages and sorted disaster relief boxes.
September is Hunger Action Month, and the food bank says this year’s message is “Play Your Part.”
They say No one person or organization can solve hunger alone, but when communities come together, individual actions become something much bigger.
“For volunteers that are corporate sponsors such as Publix, which is an extremely great partner for us, not only do they provide volunteers for us, they also provide food and grants for us to allow us to do what we do,” John Lucas, the interim CEO at the Heart of Alabama Food Bank told Action 8 News.
“That’s who we are at Publix. Part of our mission statement is to be involved as responsible citizens within our community and what better way to serve those that we have right here in the city of Montgomery, Alabama,” Publix District Manager Kayla Dean said.
“It is so important to have volunteers here to make sure that what we have gets out and delivered to those agencies, but we are super excited to have our Publix partner here to make it work even better,” Jamie Brown, the director of corporate and community partnerships for the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, said.
