MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Twelve students have filed a lawsuit against Troy University, claiming they were misled about the university’s master’s program in artificial intelligence.

The lawsuit against the university and several members of its administration was filed this week in Montgomery County Circuit Court. Ten of the students are from Montgomery, with one from Elmore County and the other from Lowndes County.

The students claim they were induced to enroll in the university’s Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence program. They say the university represented the program to them as fully supported. The students enrolled at Troy’s Montgomery campus last year for what they allege they were told to be in-person, on-campus classwork.

According to the lawsuit, the students took courses in 2025. Then, on December 16, 2025, nearly a year after the program’s initial orientation, they claim Troy quietly ended the program and hid the decision from them for several months. During that time, the students say they continued to invest considerable time, energy and money in coursework toward a degree Troy University would no longer offer nor support.

The students say it wasn’t until April 7, 2026, when the university told them the degree was not available as promised. They say the university offered to let them continue in a different program  that was online and not in person and on campus, which they didn’t want.

The lawsuit alleges that Troy caused the students significant harm to their education, jobs, careers, finances, reputations and wellbeing.

The students are seeking compensatory and punitive damages.

Action 8 News has contacted Troy University for a response. Senior Director of Communications Matt Clower told us, “Troy University has not received formal notification of the lawsuit and has no comment at this time.”
