Selma to Montgomery March Ends On Capitol Steps

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Thousands of people marched to the Alabama Capitol, retracing the steps of the final leg of the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march.

The Wednesday march is the final event in a monthlong commemoration marking the 50th anniversary of the key event of the civil rights movement.

The daughters of Martin Luther King Jr. and former Alabama Gov. George Wallace addressed the crowd at the Alabama Capitol.

Bernice King read the “How Long, Not Long” speech her father gave on March 25, 1965. Peggy Wallace Kennedy also spoke about her father, the segregationist who opposed civil rights in the 1960s but later apologized.

The crowd ranged in age from children being pushed in strollers to people who marched in 1965.
