Hayneville Police Chief Reports Two Alleged Sexual Assault Cases at Schools

Hayneville Police Chief Kelvin Mitchell says his department has uncovered two alleged sexual assault cases involving students that were unreported. He’s calling on school leaders to do more to protect students.

Mitchell says officers made the discovery while investigating a previous case that happened on March 10 at Hayneville Middle School, which he says the department was notified about several hours after it happened.

He says the two unreported cases happened in April and May of last year.

Mitchell says one of the cases involved an adult who has been charged.

“If there’s any neglect and abuse at the school, you must by Alabama law be reported to the Department of Human Resources. Here we have two cases, one at Hayneville Middle School and one at Central Elementary School that went unreported,” Mitchell told Alabama News Network.

Mitchell says in the last two years, he’s aware of five sexual assault cases involving Lowndes County students, including the unreported cases.

We don’t know whether Lowndes County school officials are facing any sort of reprimand following these new claims.

As you may remember, School Superintendent Daniel Boyd was found not guilty of reckless endangerment of students earlier this year. Boyd was charged because he allowed a janitor to return to work, despite allegations the janitor had inappropriately touched a 13-year-old.
