A major road project in Troy is ready to break ground, but drivers not following the rules of the road are creating a road hazard.
Drivers better get used to the barricades at the intersection of George Wallace and Elm Street but city leaders say so far that hasn’t been the case.
Drivers have been moving the barricades or driving around them. The city is investing about $400,000 and using $2 million of the state’s A-TRIP funds to build a bridge and repave the road
The road is a main corridor into the city and a portion of the road is on wetlands making it prone to flooding.
City leaders say It’s illegal to move the barricades and it’s also a liability to the contractor.
Mike Davis, Asst. GM Utilities said, “They could either be ticketed. They could actually hurt themselves. There are structures down there that make it where a normal vehicle won’t be able to pass and soon the road will be completely taken out so going at night could actually fall into the creek and cause damage if not severe injury.”
The barricades will be up through the completion of the project which is set to take 100 working days. The city’s set up detours to help drivers get around the construction.
