From the West Alabama Newsroom– An investigation is underway in Wilcox Co. to find out if officers were to blame for the death of a Wilcox County man who died in police custody.
Sheriff Earnest Evans says 51 year old Larry Jones died after being arrested during a domestic violence call Saturday afternoon. He says Jones started complaining of chest pains after he was handcuffed and taken into custody.
“They called an ambulance to come and pick him up and take him to the hospital,” said Evans. “He either died on the way to the hospital or at the hospital. Say it was a possible heart attack.”
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
District Attorney Michael Jackson says he plans to take the results of the SBI investigation to a Wilcox County grand jury — and it will determine whether anyone will be charged in Jones’ death.
