It’s a story we’ve been covering for weeks. A heated debate is sparked in Union Springs when a local attorney removed Confederate Flags from a city cemetery.
City leaders thought the issue was put to rest after Memorial Day Weekend when the city allowed the Sons of Confederate Veterans to place flags in the confederate cemetery.
But now a flagging event’s been circling the internet. The Alabama Flaggers out of Gadsden organized the event set for Saturday. And even though it’s called Flagging Union Springs, organizers say it’s going to be confined to private property near the cemetery.
Saint T. Thomas, Union Springs Mayor said, “I can’t control who comes, but I know one thing we are going to be prepared for whatever takes place in the city of Union Springs to protect our citizens.”
The Alabama Flaggers did not state exactly where the ceremony will be held.
If they do anything on public property without the consent of the city, the police chief says they are prepared to enforce the law.
