While most people are aware of the dangers the heat poses to humans, it’s easy to forget about the danger it poses to our four legged friends.
As the summer sun bears down in full force the threat it poses to our pets can be high, especially dogs.
Unlike humans, dogs lack the ability to sweat. They use panting to cool their bodies down. Dogs with a darker colored fur can especially suffer from heat problems.
But the biggest threat animal control officers say they are seeing right now is people leaving their dogs in parked hot with no air conditioning.
The temperature inside a parked car can soar past 110 degrees in just a few minutes. That can lead to death in dogs shortly after. So the best advice is to simply leave your pets at home.
Veterianarians also say to keep a close eye on your dog while walking them. If your dog seems to be getting sluggish, weak or starts throwing up, you need to cool them down right away. The best way to do that is to hose them down with water. You can also place ice packs under their armpits or close to their neck.
If you are caught leaving your pets in a hot, parked car you can face a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty. If convicted, you can face from 6 months to a year in jail.
