Pike Road Dedicates New School

It’s been nearly a decade in the making. Sunday was the official dedication of Pike Road School.
Mayor of Pike Road Gordon Stone says, “Through citizen involvement and census counts and through the work that citizens did working on the referendum for the revenue, we’re here today. What a great celebration!”
Pike Road School is the only one in the town of Pike Road, but because of the student population size Mayor Stone does not think it will be the only school in the community for long.
“Right now we have about eleven hundred plus in this building,” Mayor Stone says. “We’re currently in the process of looking at expansion for next year. And then on down the road we’re looking at other campus sites.”
Britney Fureigh is a fourth grade lead learner, or teacher at the new school. She was also one of the Pike Road citizens who was instrumental in starting the school.
“I’ve been in education, I’ve been a teacher and a coach for fourteen years so I wanted to be a part of something in my own neighborhood,” she shares. “The community feel, be involved with every aspect that I could.”
Other leaders in the community put in a lot of work to make this day happen. The mayor and other city officials travled across the country to find school systems that would best benefit the children of Pike Road School.
Fureigh says the school’s unique teaching style is what will make Pike Road children succeed in life. “I don’t have a desk or a chair,” she says. “I don’t sit. You just, we just go out. I mean we’re outside, we’re in here, we’re all over the place. We’re in the gym, we’re exploring, we’re going with whatever questions they offer. We investigate that. If someone says well hey, what if we need to do this, then let’s take that route, take that tangent and go with it.
The patents of the Kindergarten class wrote letters for a time capsule that will open when their children graduate from the high school. This year’s Kindergarten class will be the first to complete all thirteen years at Pike Road School when they graduate.
