Thursday Severe Risk Over; Cloudy, Cold, Breezy Friday
A line of strong to severe storms marched west to east across central and south Alabama from late Thursday morning through late Thursday afternoon. A discrete storm in advance of the line produced significant tornado damage in Selma. The storm went on to produce significant damage in northeast Autauga county, including Posey’s Crossroads and Marbury.
A single tornado track may have produced tornado damage into Elmore county near Titus, then into Coosa and Tallapoosa counties. Storms exited east Alabama into Georgia by the early evening. Thursday night looks quieter, but colder as clouds increase again. Winds turn to the northwest at 10 to 15 mph with gusts over 20 mph at times. Temperatures fall into the low 40s Friday morning, but wind chills fall into the 30s.
Temperatures remain in the 40s, with wind chills in the 30s throughout Friday. The sky remains mostly cloudy to overcast, with light drizzle possible. Overall, Friday remains raw. Friday night lows fall to near or below freezing (32°) as clouds clear. Saturday looks nicer with a mainly sunny sky, but cool with highs in the low to mid 50s. Saturday night lows fall to near or below freezing. Sunday features sunshine, passing clouds, and afternoon highs near 60°.
Rain returns to our forecast next week. Rain coverage looks low MLK Day despite a mainly cloudy sky. Tuesday’s rain chance looks higher as a weakening system approaches Alabama. Wednesday remains mainly cloudy with isolated to scattered showers. Another system may produce a better chance for rain and storms next Thursday, then next Friday may trend drier as the system departs.
