ArtsRevive offering new pottery class in Selma
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
A new pottery class is available for people in the Dallas County area. Selma non-profit ArtsRevive — kicked off the new class this year.
The new pottery class gives people a chance to learn one of the world’s oldest human inventions.
Selma potter Jo Taylor teaches the class — and Kathryn Simpkins of Burnsville is one of the students.
“You can take a slab of clay and make a vase, you can make a mug. You can make any kind of bowl or pot that you would like,” said Taylor.
“I love pottery. I’ve always enjoyed shopping for it. And I thought, oh, I need to learn to make that,” said Simpkins.
“You’re never to old to start something knew.”
Classes provide the equipment — and the support people need — to create their very own works of art.
Pottery has been just what the doctor ordered — to help Todd Deavor cope with a disability. Deavor says for him — pottery — is therapeutic.
“My therapist is actually the one that suggested that I do pottery. And umm, she hit the nail on the head with this one. It’s been a life saver,” said Deavor.
“It keeps me focused. Before hand my hands was shaking a lot. And I pretty much eliminated that by doing pottery.”
