Tallassee High School hosts 17th annual Capitol City Classic Show Choir Competition
Downtown Montgomery was filled with music and dancing Friday evening and Saturday, as 40 school choirs from across Alabama and Georgia showed off their talents. Tallassee High School hosted their annual Capitol City Classic show choir festival at MPAC. It is the first in a series of “tournament-style” competitions that happen during January, February and March each year. More than 3,000 parents, teachers and students attended the two day event.
The students had a chance to showcase their vocal talents and dancing skills, and they practiced for months to make sure they were ready for this weekend’s performances. Many of the schools will be in several more competitions over the next few months. Those end in the spring when a national champion is crowned in Boston, Massachusetts. Capitol City Classic Coordinator Jerry Cunningham founded the event 17 years ago and says each year it just gets better and better.
“To see the work that the students have put in and see how much they support each other – and how much they enjoy it and how much they get out of it. And how much the audience gets out of it – seeing these students put in the hard work and put these fantastic shows together. Some of these shows are absolutely fantastic, ” said Jerry Cunningham.
Tallassee High School student Amari Parker is in two different show choir groups called “Gold Edition” and “Voltage”, and he says, “It’s just the feeling of getting up there and the curtain’s opening and just doing what you do best. It’s just a great feeling, and I love to do it.
Navaeh Hicks is also part of two show choir groups called “Tallassee Divas” & “Voltage.” She she loves working together with other singers and dancers to put together a production for which they can be proud. “Seeing all my other friends do it and enjoying it and convince me to do it. I said let me give it a try, and I fell in love with it,” Navaeh Hicks says.
