Ground broken for “Freedom Village” community for seniors in Montgomery

More affordable housing will soon be available for seniors in Montgomery.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place today for a new housing complex known as Freedom Village, which will be built behind Sidney Lanier High School.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed and the project sponsors, the Community Action Agency of North Alabama, attended the ceremony. Home and community development block grant program funds are being used to support the project.

The project is part of the mayor’s Re-Imagine West Montgomery Initiative because it is located less than half a block from the new fire station that is under construction and the Fairview farmers market, which is being renovated.

“Really all around the city, we’re looking at opportunities to bring housing and development — mixed-use, affordable and workforce housing to our communities, and I think working with partners like we have in Community Action Agency of North Alabama, working with the Alabama Finance Authority, using CDBG funds, all helps us bring that to fruition,” Reed told Action 8 News.

Freedom Village is a 56-unit complex with gazebos, a fitness center, computer center, green spaces and picnic areas. It is scheduled to be completed next year.
