From the West Alabama Newsroom–
Friday’s weather had significant impact at the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee in Selma. Steady rainfall in the Queen City for much of the day — caused some Jubilee events — to be cancelled.
Outdoor events at the Jubilee were rained out on Friday — but there were still plenty of indoor activities and events for people to attend.
Wallace Community College Selma hosted the Education Summit — attended by over a hundred area 11th and 12th graders.
Students identified problems with the education system — then tried to come up with possible solutions.
“So today we are looking for students to leave here, first of all feeling like they are a part of the solution, and also feeling like they have an idea of what a solution towards change looks like for them,” said Summit Coordinator Candice Pettaway.
A bill to provide public money to private schools — is currently moving through the Alabama legislature.
Summit presenter Kwame Dunston was a presenter at the Summit.
“As a public school educator I’ve witnessed how underfunding works in public education, just in the area of public education,” Dunston said.
“So if public funds are to be used, all of the public funds need to go to public schools. So, the public schools can do better.”
The Invisible Giants Conference at Selma High School — highlighted the work of unknown civil rights activists.
“It’s just bringing them into view. Their stories aren’t known, untold, unrecognized and yet they have a tremendous impact on the civil rights movement,” said Toure.
