Troy Lecturer’s Comments On Situation In Ukraine and Russia

The unrest in Ukraine continues and it appears the country is headed toward a possible breakup.

Dr. Michael Slobodchikoff is closely following the developments overseas. He is a lecturer at Troy University and also an expert in Russian foreign policy. Crimean parliament unanimously declared they want to join Russia and put it to a vote in ten days. Dr. Slobodchikoff questions how a fair election can take place when there are already Russian troops in Crimea.

Dr. Michael Slobodchikoff, Lecturer, Expert in Russian Foreign Policy said, “I don’t see it getting resolved quickly. It’s a situation that will continue on for months and unfortunately could have tragic ending. It could end up conceivably in a civil war. And certainly it will end up I think currently as the basis as a new cold war between Russia and the United States which is not something any of us want to see.”

The U.S. is supporting the interim government in Ukraine right now and is unhappy with Russia’s move to put troops in Crimea. Dr. Slobodchikoff says Crimea, the peninsula in Ukraine, is the only warm water port for the Russian Navy and makes it vital to Russian security interests.
