Clean Up From Tornado in Jackson’s Gap Continues
JACKSON’S GAP, Ala. (WAKA) — Cleanup continues in Tallapoosa County after a tornado tore through Jackson’s Gap, a small community between Alexander City and Dadeville, leaving widespread damage in its wake.
Tornadic winds hurled a trampoline into a tree near a home that lost its roof. Further down Rock Springs Road, the twisted remains of a mobile home—once belonging to Danny Nelson’s brother-in-law—lay scattered across the property.
“You couldn’t tell that much at night, but when the light came back, it looked like a bomb went off and just threw everything everywhere,” Nelson said.
The winds were powerful enough to lift the mobile home from its original location and move it to the front of the property.
“It’s all a big surprise, really,” Nelson said. “I mean, I’m surprised we found some of this stuff under all of this. I thought it’d be out in the woods somewhere, but we were able to find most of what he needed.”
The tornado left food from the refrigerator strewn across the ground. A front porch and steps now lead to nowhere, and insulation hangs from the tops of trees. A barn at the back of the property was torn apart, but miraculously, the motorcycle inside sustained only minor damage.
“He usually rides them out, but he came to my house this time, and thank goodness he did,” Nelson said.
A red truck sits in the same spot it did before the storm with just one new dent, but it remains drivable. Meanwhile, large piles of debris—once walls, floors, furniture, and appliances—now wait to be hauled away.
Nelson didn’t hesitate to help clean up, saying it’s simply what family does.
“I would love for someone to help me if I was in that situation,” he said. “That’s what it’s all about—you know, helping everybody. That’s the main thing in life to me, anyway.”
