Children’s Harbor, Auburn University launch effort to care for chronically-ill children

Children’s Harbor and Auburn University have signed an agreement to work together to care for chronically-ill children.
Action 8 News was at a celebration yesterday at Children’s Harbor, a pediatric medical camp facility that is on 66 acres on the banks of Lake Martin near Eclectic. Children’s Harbor is a non-profit which works to strengthen families of seriously ill children through refuge, respite and resources.
Children’s Harbor and Auburn say they will work on dozens of projects in the coming years.
More than 20 Auburn campus programs involving all 12 of Auburn’s colleges, as well as the graduate school, honors college, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the Office of Research and Economic Development and Auburn Youth Programs will be a part of this effort.
Key components of the agreement include internships and clinical placements. Auburn students will receive hands-on training and mentorship opportunities while supporting Children’s Harbor programs. Auburn Outreach will provide support in grant-writing and access to university expertise, and Children’s Harbor will offer collaboration opportunities.
At the celebration event, the staff at Children’s Harbor got to see Auburn students’ ideas for more landscaping at the facility. One part of the agreement will be to make Children’s Harbor a satellite location for Auburn’s landscape architect students, giving them a learning lab.
Children’s Harbor has been on the banks of Lake Martin for 36 years. It has 46 camps scheduled for this year. Currently, a Songs For Sight camp is taking place for children with low vision.
